Friday 10th April: The Choral

Overview

The Choral is a 2025 British historical drama co-produced and directed by Nicholas Hytner and written by Alan Bennett. Set in 1916 during the First World War, it follows a Yorkshire town’s choral society as it tries to stage a major concert while the war drains the community of its young men. It stars Ralph Fiennes, alongside Roger Allam, Mark Addy, Alun Armstrong, Robert Emms, and Simon Russell Beale.

It premiered at TIFF on 5 September 2025, with a UK release on 7 November 2025.

Plot summary

In the fictional town of Ramsden, Yorkshire, the local choral society is struggling because so many men have gone to fight. The committee decides to recruit younger singers to keep the society alive and appoints a new chorus master, Dr Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes), a driven and uncompromising musician recently returned from Germany. As the choir rebuilds, tensions surface in the town — including suspicion, prejudice, and wartime pressure — while conscription papers begin to arrive and the community faces the cost of the conflict. Making music together becomes both a distraction and a way to endure what’s coming.

Themes

Art as survival: music as something that holds people together when life is falling apart.

Community under strain: class, tradition, and local politics rubbing up against the realities of war.

Prejudice in wartime: suspicion of “outsiders”, and social judgement (including anti-German feeling and homophobia) shaping how people treat each other.

Reception

Reception was generally positive but not unanimous. Some reviews praised the performances and the emotional pull of the music-led story, while others felt the narrative was a bit crowded or conventional in places

What is Village Screen?

Village Screen is a rural community cinema scheme providing quality film screenings in community venues throughout Norfolk. Volunteer groups screen the latest blockbuster or a timeless classic in the comfort of their local village hall or community centre, supported by Creative Arts East with films licensed through Moviola. The events offer an opportunity for neighbours to meet, socialise and relax – less travel and lower cost means many rural residents can enjoy the magic of the silver (or in our case, white) screen.

How's it work at the Court House?

Run by volunteers, we been showing the best of current films to the village since 2009. We screen films about 8 times a year (February to June and September to November), usually on the second Friday of the month, with matinee (2.30) and evening (7.30) showings. Doors open half an hour before the performances start.

After a brief welcome, we usually show a trailer for the next film and a short film or two, and take  a break for refreshments before the main feature. We serve tea, coffee, cakes and Ronaldo's locally produced  ice cream in the afternoon and wine, beer, soft drinks and ice cream in the evening. The shows normally finish around 4.45 in the afternoon and 9.45 in the evening depending on the length of the main film.

How do I get a ticket?

Tickets are £5.00 in advance available about a month before the show from S&S Mitchell Newsagents, The Street, Blofield. Please note that return tickets cannot be accepted less than 7 days before event. Money from the films goes towards paying the licence fees, running the Court House and improving our facilities.
